Saint-Etienne stumble again as Ligue 2 promotion race heads to dramatic final day
A costly defeat at Rodez left Saint-Etienne clinging to third place, while Le Mans failed to seal second spot and several battles across Ligue 2 took another turn.
Saint-Etienne’s push for an immediate return to Ligue 1 suffered another serious blow on Saturday, as a 2-1 defeat away to Rodez left the club with work to do on the final day of the Ligue 2 season.
The result kept ASSE in third place and, more importantly, outside the automatic promotion spots. With just one round remaining, Saint-Etienne now trail second-placed Le Mans by two points after another damaging evening in a campaign that has started to slip away at the worst possible moment.
Saint-Etienne lose ground at Rodez
Already under pressure after a run of poor results, the Greens needed a response in Rodez. Instead, they suffered a fourth damaging setback in a short span and watched direct promotion edge further from reach.
Rodez, still chasing its own ambitious finish, made the most of the occasion and claimed a 2-1 win that could prove decisive at both ends of the table. For Saint-Etienne, the defeat means promotion is no longer in their hands in the cleanest sense: they must now hope for help elsewhere while taking care of business themselves in the last round.
It was another frustrating chapter for a side that had long aimed to secure a top-two finish and avoid the uncertainty of the promotion play-off route. Instead of building momentum late in the season, Saint-Etienne have faltered just as the pressure has increased.
Le Mans miss the chance to finish the job
Saint-Etienne were not the only side to leave points on the table. Le Mans also failed to fully capitalize, drawing 1-1 with Reims when victory would have guaranteed second place behind already crowned champions Troyes.
That draw keeps Le Mans in a favorable position, but not a secure one. Their two-point cushion over Saint-Etienne means the race for automatic promotion remains alive going into the final weekend.
Troyes, meanwhile, underlined why they have been the division’s benchmark this season. The champions produced another emphatic display, sweeping aside Laval 4-0 and showing little sign of easing off despite already having wrapped up top spot.
Final-day tension building across the table
The implications of the latest results stretch well beyond Saint-Etienne and Le Mans.
Le Mans will head to Bastia next week knowing that a difficult assignment awaits. Bastia still have something to fight for, with hopes of climbing into the promotion play-off picture not yet extinguished. That should make the final round especially tense for the side currently holding second place.
Saint-Etienne, for their part, will be watching closely and hoping Bastia can take points off their promotion rival. But ASSE must also avoid another slip, because even the play-off positions are not entirely free from pressure.
Red Star, referred to in the French standings as the Audoniens, remain right behind after their own eventful weekend. Despite losing 3-1 to Amiens, they are still in the mix near the top end of the table, though that defeat was a missed opportunity to put heavier pressure on the teams above them.
Amiens relegated despite upset win
One of the more striking results of the round came from Amiens, who beat Red Star 3-1. Yet even that victory was not enough to save them. Other results confirmed Amiens’ relegation to Ligue 3, bringing a painful end to their survival fight.
It was a cruel twist: a strong performance and three points on the board, but no route out of the bottom places once the wider picture settled.
At the other end of the relegation battle, several teams were able to breathe easier by the end of the night. Grenoble, Boulogne, Clermont and Nancy all secured their Ligue 2 status before the final day, taking the drama out of their closing fixtures.
Montpellier’s hopes are over
There was also a definitive end to Montpellier’s ambitions. Their 2-1 defeat to Clermont mathematically ended any lingering hope of reaching the top flight.
Clermont were described as clinical and opportunistic, and that efficiency proved enough to take all three points. For Montpellier, it was the kind of loss that summed up a season of missed chances. With the final round still to be played, their promotion dream is already over.
Rodez, Reims and Annecy still eyeing play-off places
Rodez’s win over Saint-Etienne was not just significant because of its effect on the automatic promotion race. It also strengthened the club’s own standing in the chase for the promotion play-offs.
Rodez have emerged as one of the stories of the run-in, staying in contention deep into the season and now carrying real momentum into the final day.
Reims, after their draw with Le Mans, also remain alive in the play-off race. So do Annecy. The margins are slim: Annecy sit three points behind Rodez, while Reims are two back. That leaves plenty to settle in the last set of fixtures.
Laval’s heavy defeat to Troyes further complicated their position. They still occupy the current play-off spot, but Bastia and others remain close enough to threaten them.
A season-defining last round awaits
The picture is now clear even if the final order is not.
Troyes are champions. Amiens are down. Several clubs have secured safety. Montpellier are out of the promotion chase.
But the key question remains unresolved: who will join Troyes in earning direct promotion to Ligue 1?
Le Mans are still best placed, but they failed to deliver the knockout blow against Reims. Saint-Etienne are stumbling, yet not finished. Rodez, Reims, Annecy, Laval and Bastia all still have reasons to believe they can shape the final standings.
For Saint-Etienne, the equation is uncomfortable but simple. After another costly defeat, they no longer have room for error. A club of their size and expectations came into this stage of the season targeting a clean return to the top flight. Now they head into the final day needing a win, a favor from elsewhere, and a much sharper performance than the one they produced in Rodez.
For neutrals, it sets up exactly the kind of ending Ligue 2 so often delivers: crowded stakes, narrow margins, and everything still on the line.
Next weekend, promotion, play-off places and final positioning will all be settled. Saint-Etienne can still dream, but after Saturday’s loss, that dream has become far more fragile.
